수능 영어 1등급, 사고의 흐름 ("확장적 사고")

[우선, 이전 게시글의 내용을 먼저 보여드리겠습니다]

우리는 흔히 영어 모의고사를 풀고 지문을 읽을 때, 단편적으로 문장을 읽고, 

지문을 어느 정도 읽은 후 문제를 풀고는 합니다.

하지만, 이는 개개인의 문해력을 완전히 끌어내지는 못한다고 생각합니다.

지금부터, 현장에서 수능 영어를 가르치는 한 명의 사람으로서 

제가 봐왔던 많은 학생들의 행동 습관을 토대로

여러모로 생각했던 것들 중 하나인 ”확장적 사고“에 대해서 말해보고자 합니다.

부디 이 글을 끝까지 읽어보시고 다시금 본인의 읽기 습관을 되새겨보시기를 바랍니다.

우리는 한 모의고사에 28문항의 독해 지문을 보게 됩니다.

말씀드릴 확장적 사고의 범주는 

독해 능력을 중점적으로 요구하는 

20번~24번, 31번~35번, 40번, 41~42번에 해당합니다.

글을 읽고, 우리는 해당 지문의 주제는 무엇인지, 

필자의 주장은 어떤 것인지, 

어떤 소재와 대상이 나와 글을 이루었는지를 볼 수 있어야 합니다.

하지만 말씀 드렸듯이 한 문장 읽고, 

그 뒤의 문장을 읽고 해석하고 넘어가는 듯이 읽는 것은 

나중에 같은 지문을 봐도 그 지문에 대한 정보가 기억이 안나게 하며 

아주 일차원적인 생각만을 가능하게 합니다. 

그도 그럴것이, 좀 더 복잡한 사고를 통해 

답을 유추해내기 위해서는 

글의 내용에 대한 어느 정도의 이해가 전제 조건인데, 

이해가 안되게 읽기 때문입니다.

저는 이 점이 문제라고 생각합니다.

우선, 제가 말하는 확장적 사고는, 

한 문장을 읽어도 

본인이 알고 있던 배경 지식과의 연결 / 

지문 내 다른 문장과의 관련성 파악 / 

해당 문장의 역할 파악(필자의 주장을 나타내는 문장, 혹은 그에 준하는 문장 등)을 말합니다. 

이는 단순히 읽고 해석하고 쭉 넘어가는 읽기와는 다르지요. 

이것을 실전에서 사용할 수 있냐고요? 

네. 사용할 수 있습니다.

하지만 혼자서 공부할 때 분석하는 그런 정도의 사고와는 다른 수준으로, 

실질적으로 시간 내에 도움될 수 있는 정도의 수준에서만 활용할 수 있습니다.

어렵지 않습니다. 쉽게 얘기하자면, 

지문의 첫 문장을 읽고 바로 뒤의 문장을 해석하는 것이 아니라, 

그냥 소재가 뭔지 한 번 짚고 넘어가는 정도입니다.

그러고 뒷 문장에서 소재에 대한 언급을 한 맥락이 어떻게 이어지는가를 보는 것이죠.

확장적 사고는 글의 중반부나 후반부에서도 사용할 수 있습니다.

만약 글을 도입/전개/결론 부분으로 나누어 볼 때 

(각각 글의 초반부/중반부/후반부라고 가정하겠습니다) 

전개나 결론 부분에서 언급되는 정보들을 초반 부분의 소재와 연결하여 

글이 소재를 어떻게 다루고

어떤 다른 대상을 꺼내와 

필자의 주장으로 이끌어가는가를 보는 것입니다.

당연히 이러한 메커니즘의 읽기는 처음부터 쉽게 되지는 않을 것입니다. 

애초에 대부분의 학생들은 결국 

한 문장 직독직해하고 넘어가는 수준의 독해만을 꾸준히 해왔을테니까요. 

하지만, 이렇게 읽게되는 그 순간부터 다음과 같은 것들이 가능해집니다.

1. 주제에 대한 정확한 이해
2. 소재에 대한 정의
3. 소재를 제외한 다른 대상의 특성에 대한 이해
4. 글이 어떻게 귀결되는지에 대한 이해
5. 정답 선지에 대한 괴리감 저하
6. 추론 능력 향상

영어 지문은 그냥 보고 번역해서 답 맞추라고 주는 것이 아니라고 생각하시면 좋습니다.

우리가 해야하는 추론은, 

어찌 보면 글에서 주어주는 정보의 범주를 넘어 

조금 더 넓게 읽고, 나무가 아닌 숲을 보는, 그런 류의 읽기가 선행되어야 비로소 가능해집니다.

아래 보이는 예제는 2024학년도 9월 모의평가 21번 문항입니다. 

각 문장을 읽고 제가 실전에서 사고했던 것들을 최대한 재현하여 있는 그대로 담아보겠습니다.

우선 사고의 흐름을 보시기 전에 먼저 한 번 풀어보셔도 좋을 것 같습니다.

지금부터 제 사고의 흐름을 보시지요. 

저는 미리 말씀드리자면, 독해의 강약조절을 중시합니다.

글의 아이디어를 구성하는 데 직결되어있는 정보와 추가적인 디테일의 중요도는 확연히 다르기 때문입니다.

그래서 중요하지 않은 것들은 해석하지 않았습니다. 

(수험생 시절 실제로 중요하지 않은 것들은 딱히 힘줘서 읽지도 않았습니다)

그리고 중요한 사고는 *표시했습니다.

(프로젝트에서) Gold plating -> 쓸데없이 결과 향상. / (ex) 추가해도 딱히 의미없는 거 덧붙이기 / 다시 말해(*Gold Plating 재정의 신호!) 개인 재능 뽐내기 제외 아무 이유없음.

*아 프로젝트를 하는데, 그룹에 제멋대로 하는 입증된 전문가가 있으면 아무 의미도 없이 개인 재능 뽐내려고 Gold plating을 한다는 말인가? (1번 문장과 2번 문장의 맥락을 다루며 도출해낸 생각)

이런 환경(=전문가가 껴있는 프로젝트)에서 전문가들은 프로젝트를 자신들의 스킬 세트를 시험하고 풍부하게  할 수 있는 기회로 본다. 

*그럼 전문가들이 프로젝트를 그냥 시험장으로 보고 자신들의 스킬에 집중하는구나. 맞네 그러면 아까 한 생각 (*아 프로젝트를 하는데, 그룹에 제멋대로 하는 입증된 전문가가 있으면 아무 의미도 없이 개인 재능 뽐내려고 Gold plating을 한다는 말인가?)이 맞네. 그럼 3번 문장은 1&2번 문장이랑도 연결되네, 뒷받침하는 문장이구만.

그래서 강한 유혹이 있다 (Gold plating 하려는) / 왜? : 전문가는 만족할 만한 더 높은 퀄의 작업을 하려고 / 그치만 고객한테는 그닥 중요 X / 동시에, 프로젝트에서 중요한 자원을 제거함.

*여튼 고객은 신경 안 쓰는건데 계속 전문가 혼자서 뭔가 해보려고 하네. 팀플 못하네. 작업물 다 망치는구만.

*그러면 다시 말해서

전문가 혼자서 자신의 시험대, 연습장 삼아서 프로젝트에 뭘 자꾸 얹는구나. 

근데 그런 행위를 Gold plating이라고 부르네.

아까 말한 거 보면 작업물에 좋은 영향 안 주고 쓸데없는 거라고 하네.

왜 한다고 했더라. 아 전문가 개인 재능 뽐내려고~!

그러면 선지 2가 말하는 '개인을 입증하려고 작업물의 질을 올리는 것은 바람직하지 않다.'와 일맥상통하네~

글이 이해가 안될 수가 없다는 것이 제가 고3때 내린 결론입니다.

마지막 속담이 말하고자 하는 내용은 무엇일까?

오직 자신을 만족시키고자 하는 유혹이 있다고 한다.

good은 좋은 것, best는 최고 혹은 최선인 것.

좋은 것과 최고 혹은 가장 높은 수준에서 하는 것은 차이가 분명히 있다. 속담은, 잘하는 것을 망치는 것은 최고로 하는 것이라고 한다.

‘상’ 부분에서 Gold Plating에 대한 기초적인 설명을 통해 특성을 말하며

‘중’ 부분에서 전문가들이 프로젝트에 참여했을 때 나타나는 현상과 이에 따라 나타나는 특징을 말한다.

‘하’ 부분에서 Gold Plating은 결국 부정적임을 주장하며 글을 마친다.

[특성 – 특징 – 결론]의 구성임을 확인해야 한다.

그리고 다음은 필요 없는 부분 다 지우고 독해하는 것을 시각화해본 것입니다.
